    Women in the workplace

    http://www.csr-asia.com/index.php?p=9206

Yesterday’s CSR Wednesday Briefing (I know it was Monday!) was covered by Channel News Asia. As reported, one aspect of the talk covered the fact that as there isn’t any equal opportunities legislation in Singapore it is even more important for companies to implement policies that do not discriminate against women. It was a great briefing, Tan Joo Hymn, President of AWARE (Association of Women for Action and Research) provided the key details of the challenges facing working women in Singapore today and then the Managing Director of Citigroup Private Bank, Tan Su Shan gave an inspirational talk about the challenges met and tackled in her career and the diversity policies at Citigroup. AWARE calls on businesses to do more to support working women
By Julia Ng, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 26 February 2007 2257 hrs

SINGAPORE : The Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE) has called on the corporate world to do more to support working women.

It believes companies will benefit if they do so.

The call was made at a Corporate Social Responsibility Asia talk held ahead of the International Women's Day on March 8.

The main theme of the session - women in the workplace.

According to AWARE, since Singapore does not have equal opportunities legislation, it is even more important for companies to implement policies that do not discriminate against women.

One example of corporate social responsibility - affirmative policies on recruitment, promotion and retaining female employees who are starting a family.

"Of the women who contacted AWARE, some of problems included having their job scope and responsibilities changed while they were pregnant, employers finding fault with them, they had a pay cut, and some were dismissed outright," said Tan Joo Hymn, president of AWARE.

"While the government is trying to raise the fertility rate, I think there needs to be a corresponding policy within the corporate circles to ensure that pregnant women are not discriminated against." - CNA /ls

    Women's Register

    Intiative by SCWO
    http://www.womensregister.org
It is administered by the Singapore Council of Women's Organisations to assist in increasing the number of women in leadership positions in Singapore and serves to identify women who are interested in serving in government or business sector Boards, Authorities and Committees.

It serves as an online database containing details of women in Singapore who are interested in representation on Boards or Committees.

This can lead to enormous personal and professional benefits and rewards and help you make a difference to the community while gaining new experience, enhancing existing skills and enabling greater networking opportunities.

Women's Register works as an information depository for interested women who are interested in appointments to specific business or community sectors, public speaking or mentoring support to females. Your name, experience and areas of interest will be made available to individual or corporate members who will search and match their needs.
