(SINGAPORE) Time magazine has named Temasek chief Ho Ching among its 100 Most Influential People in the World, making her the second Singaporean to make the list after her father-in-law, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, was on it in 2005.
Grouped with business giants like Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, Apple founder Steve Jobs and Youtube creators Chad Hurley and Steven Chen, Ms Ho was named in the Builders and Titans category.
Writing for Time, noted investment guru Jim Rogers describes Ms Ho as 'a Singapore technocrat who made China take notice', alluding to China's announcement - followed by others from Japan and South Korea - that it wants to set up a state investment firm modelled on Temasek.
'Talk about influence,' wrote Mr Rogers. 'China, a country with 1.3 billion people, recently said it was considering establishing a company 'like Temasek Holdings', the investment arm of the government of Singapore - a country of four million.'
Ms Ho overhauled Temasek after she was appointed CEO in 2002, establishing guidelines to boost accountability and make the firm more transparent, he wrote.
Although 'well-connected', she took a 'strictly professional approach' and 'has not been afraid to let operations fail'.
With that line, Mr Rogers set the stage nicely to introduce what he recognised critics like to pick on - Temasek's 'troubled US$3.8 billion purchase of Shin Corp from former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra'.
But, he wrote: 'If you do not make mistakes, you are not trying and will never succeed . . . Expect even more countries to discover that the road to the future runs through Singapore.'
Time magazine's list also includes figures like Al-Qaeda leader Osama
